Colour Specification for High-Visibility Safety Vests
1. Introduction
High-visibility safety vests are critical personal protective equipment (PPE), widely used in construction, transportation, electric power, petrochemical and other industries. Standardised colour requirements help improve workers’ safety awareness, enhance visibility, and reduce accident risks. This specification defines colour standards for safety vests to regulate their production, sales and application, and protect the personal safety of on-site workers.
2. Scope of Application
This specification applies to safety vests manufactured, sold and used within China, including but not limited to the following sectors:

3. Power facilities
4. Petrochemical industry
5. Transportation
6. Mining
7. Other industries requiring on-site personal safety protection
3. Colour Standards
1. The base colour of safety vests shall be bright red, orange, yellow or fluorescent colours. These colours deliver high visibility, reminding surrounding personnel in complex working environments.
2. Colour combinations shall follow the rules below:
(1) Primary colours: red, orange, yellow or fluorescent colours
(2) Accent colours: white, black or grey
(3) Patterns: Custom patterns such as industry logos and warning marks can be designed according to sector requirements.
3. Additional colour requirements:
(1) The area of the primary colour shall be larger than that of the accent colour.
(2) Pattern colours shall be clear and highly noticeable.
(3) Colour matching shall be harmonious to avoid visual fatigue.
4. Design Requirements for Safety Vests
1. Safety vests shall be made of breathable, wear-resistant, corrosion-resistant and easy-to-clean fabrics.
2. Styles shall follow ergonomic principles to ensure comfort and freedom of movement during work.
3. Safety vests shall be fitted with reflective strips or reflective markings. The width of reflective strips shall be no less than 50 mm, and the area of separate reflective markings shall be no less than 100 cm².
